The Right Rev. Monsignor Byrne, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Adelaide, who celebrates on Wednesday next the 5Oth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood, has every reason to be regarded as the "grand old man" of the Roman Catholio Church in South Australia . Born in Dublin on February 22, 1834, he is now in his 77 th year.  As a boy he was destined for tho priesthood, and while yet a youth entered on his Etudies for the Benedictine novitiate at the monastery of Subiaco, Italy. His health, however, caused him to return to his home and abandon temporarily all idea of enter ing the church.  About this time the eyes of the world were being turned towards Australia in consequence of the reports ot sensational gold discoveries in Victoria.  Young Byrne, then a clerical student and an aspirant for the priesthood, was among the number attracted, and in 1855, in company with the late Archbishop Reynolds and the Right Rev. Monsignor Bourke, .V.G., of Perth, who celebrated his golden jubilee about a year ago, he emigrated to Western Australia.  Some time was spent there in scholastic work, but eventually Messrs. Byrne and Reynolds determined to try their fortunes farther east, and came to South Australia.  Mr. Bourke remained in the West, and eventually rose to high preferment in the church.  The young stu dent's voyage from Fremantle to Port Ade laide in January, 1857,  in the schooner New Perseverance, was an adventurous one.  Prior to leaving Fremantle the boat was boarded by the police, who arrested tile owner, Sam Breaks, a ticKet-of-leave man, who had built the vessel out of materials questionably obtained.  A quantity of goods were also seized, but the Govern ment, anxious to forward the passengers, iwho numbered 47, to their destination, placed the vessel in charge of Captain Adams, another ex-convict, who went under an assumed name, and it set sail on January 28. Misfortune beset the craft the whole way across.  She took in water at an alarming rate, and her top spars gave way almost as soon as she had started.  Captain Adams brought her safely, how ever, to within about a hundred miles of Kangaroo Island, when easterly winds set in and delayed the vessel for many days.  The captain fell seriously in with dropsy, the food supplies ran out, and the passengers and crew were reduced to an allow ance of three biscuits each for three days, and then two biscuits for another three days.  On the day of the lost distribution, when everything looked black for the little vessel and its human freight, the wind suddenly changed, and a stiff westerly breeze drove the schooner into Spencer's Gulf.  Here she was succoured by the barque Ascendant, from London, which supplied the half-famished passengers with biscuits, preserved meat, medicine, and a few bottles of wine.  The voyage to Port Adelaide was then resumed, and the schooner arrived there on March 6, 1857, after being 86 days out from Fremantle.  The majority of the passengers and crew soon recovered, but Captain Adams, worn out by disease, succumbed in a boarding-house opposite the York Hotel as Monsignor Byrne was in the act of giving bim a drink of water.
After completing their clerical studies in  Adelaide Mr. Byrne and his shipmate (afterwards Archbishop Reynolds) were ordained priests of the Church in St. Francis Savior's Cathedral by the Right Rev Pat rick Bona venture Geoghegan, O.S.F., the second Bishop of Adelaide.  Father Byrne was subsequently stationed in Adelaide lor some years.   He took a deep interest in religious education, and in October, I860, .was, with Dr. Reynolds, one of the speak ers at a meeting held in St. Patrick's Church, West-terrace, at which it was de cided io petition Parliament against the evils then prevalent in the system of edu cation in force in the Government schools.  He was primarily responsible also for the establishment of the Sisters of St. Joseph school in Pirie-street, and Christian Brothers Coliege, and has also assisted in the establishment of the Dominican Nuns in their present home at Cabra.  His latest donation to the cause is the presentation to the parish of Goodwood of a new school at his own expense.
In 1865 Father Byrne was placed in charge at Kapunda, where he remained till 1869, and from there transferred to Salisbury, where he had a term of three years  He returned to the city in 1893, and was appointed vicar-general by the late Archbishop Reynolds.  He was administrator of the archdiocese during Archbishop Reynolds  visit to Rome and Ireland in 1679-80.  In 1882 he paid a visit to Rome and Ireland, and in 1883 returned to Kapunda, remaining in charge of that district till 1897.  In 1881 the Holy Sec conferred on him the degree of D.D.  On the death of Archbishop Reynolds in 1893, he again became administrator of the archdiocese, and held that position until the transference of Archbishop O'Reily from Port Augusta in 1895.  Mgr. Byrne was then re-appointed, in conjunction with the late Archdeacon Russell, vicar-general.  In 1902 he was made a domestic prelate,  which carries with it the title of Monsignor, by the late Pope Leo XHX He was again administrator of the archdiocese during the archbishop's visit to Rome and Ireland in 1905.
Mgr. Byrne first took charge of his resent parish. Goodwood, in Julv, 1897, but in April, 1904 (says the "Southern Cross"), he retired temporarily, with the view of enjoying that rest and.ease in his old age to which long years of service had entitled him.  He was on that occasion presented wrth a chair as a token of esteem and affection on the part of his parishioners.  After a trip to the eastern States, Mgr. Bvrne took up his residence at the Goodwood Orphanage, as chaplain to the institution, and also continued to discharge the duties of vicar-general. In 1907, however, he attain resumed active duty as rector of Goodwood.  Soon after he underwent successfully an operation at the private hospital, North Adelaide, which few men of his age would have come through safely  and he has continued to discharge his duties since with as much activity; as a younger man.  In addition to writing a "Historv of the Catholic Church in South Australia," from the first beginnings to the death of Bishop Geoghegan. he has published a translation of the "vera Sapi enta" of Thomas Kempis.
The friends of Mgr. Byrne intend to celebrate his golden jubilee on Wednesday next by entertaining him and presenting him with an Ruminated address and a purse of sovereigns.  The gathering will be hald in the evening in Holy Cross Church, Goodwood.  On the morning of the same day 11 o'clock mass will be celebrated in St. Francis Xavieres Cathedral, where Mgr. Byrne was ordained, and a breakfast and presentation from the clergy  of the archdiocese will follow.

'With regret is recorded the untimely death of Mother Mary Teresa Joseph,  Prioress of St. Mary's domimcan Convent, Franklin street.
The deceased lady had been ailing for some time, but three weeks ago, on the occasion of the annual examination of the institution, she appeared to all who knew her to be thoroughly restored to health.  A sudden change, however, set in, which terminated in her death, which took place on Tuesday evening, January 14.
She was the daughter of William Moore, Esq., Moattown, County Meath; also sister of the late Rev. B. Moore, C. C. Multifarnham, and of the Rev. J. Moore, President of the Diocesan College, Navan.  She was born at Moattown on June 7, 1840, and received her elementary education at a branch of the Cabra House, probably known to many
of our readers, at Usher's Quay, Dublin.  To complete her education she subsequently removed to Cabra, the Mother House in Ireland, where, feeling herself called by God to the religious state, she became a postulant of the above convent on December 8, 1861; received the habit on May 12, 1862, and made her solemn profession at the hands of His Eminence Cardinal Cullen on May 20, 1863.  When Dr. Shiel, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Adelaide, went to Ireland in 1868 to supplement his clerical staff in this diocese, he thought it well to bring with him upon his return a community of nuns that would be specially adapted as a teaching Order to raise the standard of Catholic education in this colony, and having been well acquainted with the prestige of the community of Cabra as an educational establishment, he determined on
securing a foundation for a convent in his diocese from that house. Accordingly he asked the Mother Prioress of the above Institute for a community of her nuns, stating
at the same time that he wanted not that they should take their fortunes with them, that he desired only themselves— and considering what a blessing they would be, he would take care that they would be, as religious, respectably supported in Adelaide.  On these conditions the Prioress of Cabra sent a foundation to Adelaide, the head of which foundation was Mother Mary Teresa Joseph, nominated and appointed to such position by His Eminence Cardinal Cullen.  She was a woman in whom were
combined the simplicity of a child with the acumen of a Thomas.  She was indeed a woman of rare intellectual endowments, and having these endowments highly cultivated, her loss is a heavy one to the Catholics of South Australia, and we doubt not that all others of different persuasions will feel that as a benefactress to the colony, and as an ornament to Christianity her early demise will be sincerely deplored.  The obsequies of the late Mary Teresa Joseph were performed with due solemnity on Thursday,  January 16.  The services commenced shortly after 10 a.m.  At 11 a.m. the Requiem Mass was sung by the Rev. Fathers J. J. Roche (officiating priest), M. O'Connor (Deacon), J. Haher (Sub-Deacon), and F, Kehoe (Master of Ceremonies).  In addition to those assisting at the service there were present the Very Rev, the Administrator of the Diocese (Father Reynolds), together with the priests of the city and the adjacent districts, and Dr. Gosse, ; medical attendant of the Convent. Mass was sung in the oratory of the convent, the windows of which were hung with crape, while in the centre was placed the coffin— an elaborately finished white coffin, with silver mountings.  Upon it were placed three wreaths, one of green leaves, the second of coloured flowers, and the third of pure white flowers. Along the front of the altar was the inscription, 'Laudere benedicere et pradicare'.  A door connecting the oratory with the schoolroom was placed open, and thus the large congregation which had assembled in the latter room were enabled to participate in the devotional exercises.  At 1 o'clock a procession was formed, which proceeded in the following order towards the West terrace Cemetery. The crucifer, followed by the children, about 150 in number, belonging to the three schools in connection with the Convent, dressed all in white, with black sashes, and bearing in their hands bunches of flowers; the acolytes, and following them the priests robed in soutane and surplice, repeating a Litany.  Then came the coffin, borne by Messrs. L. Conrad, H. W. Hayman, J. Condon, Police sergeant Shiel, Sullivan, and Lynch.  The coffin was thus carried as a tribute of affectionate respect for the deceased, and was immediately succeeded by the empty hearse, after which came ten carriages and a large concourse of mourners on foot.  As the funeral cortege neared the entrance of the Cemetery the coffin was placed in the hearse.  The body was interred in a vault prepared at the south-east corner of the mortuary chapel near the entrance, and when it was lowered into its last resting-place the children scattered their flowers upon the coffin.  The grief depicted on the many countenances surrounding the grave bore ample testimony to the hold the departed Prioress had acquired upon the affection of those who knew her ; while if

' With the children of the Convent the late Mother Prioress was a very child ; her slightest wish was looked upon by all as something that should be done as an act of love due to her for her motherly fondness and care.  It was the delight of the children resident in the establishment on the occasion of her recovery from her recent severe illness, when the medical attendant held forth hopes of her recovery, to flock around her, and to show their happiness in believing she was restored to them again.  As an observer I am confident that the feeling evinced by all classes of the community at the scene of the little children whom she had taught, when they cast their flowers in her grave, will never be forgotten by any person of whatsoever denomination who witnessed it.'

A.M. Crofts, O.P., Vicar-Provincial of the Dominican Priests, and the occasional sermon was delivered by Rev. Father Forerest P.P Kelly, O'Brien O.P, and Gleeson; also the parents and immediate relatives of the newly professed Sisters.  All present were impressed by the solemnity of the Profession ceremony.  Father Forrest O.P., at the beginning of the Profession ceremony, addressed those about to take their vows, by taking as his text "Leaving all things, they followed Him", and he then went on to explain that which was involved in taking part in this profession.
