Sister Mary Magdalen DE PAZZIOMary Magdalene WARD
Died 30 September 1894 at North Adelaide, SA Aged 47 years South Australian Register Tuesday 02 October 1894 page 7 DEATH OF A NUN. Solemn services in connection with the death of Sister Mary Magdalen de Pazzio, O.P., which occurred at the Dominican Priory, North Adelaide, on Sunday morning, were held in the Church for the Perpetual Adoration ot the Blessed Sacrament, adjoining the Priory, on Monday morning. The Very Rev. Dr. Byrne (Administrator of the Diocese) presided, and amongst those in tho sanctuary were Archpriest Nevin, Archdeacon Russell, Dean Kennedy, and the Revd. Fathers Kendelan, O.C.C., McCabe, O.S.F., Dietel, S.J., Williams, Collier, Cosgrave, Hurley, McEvoy, Cornes, and Doheny. Messrs. A. Mayo, V. C, and F. Adamson acted as acolytes, and Mr. A. MacDonald as thurifer. Office for the Dead was first chanted, Fathers McEvoy and Hurley being the leaders. At the Solemn Requiem Mass Dean Kennedy was celebrant, and he was assisted by Father McCabe an Deacon and Father Cornes as Sub-Deacon. Father Cosgrave acted as Director of Ceremonies. After the Mass the Absolution was pronounced by the Administrator, the bier resting infront of the sanctuary covered with a white pail and black cross in the centre. The ceremony having concluded, the coffin was borne out to tho hearse and conveyed to the West-terrace Cemetery, where the remains of the deceased lady were interred in the vault near the mortuary chapel. Sister Magdalene came of a remarkable family, and her father (Dr. William George Ward) will be remembered as Pusey 's friend and one of the great spirits in the later stages of what is known as the Oxford Movement. A writer in the July Dublin Review, in treating of the life of William George Ward, speaks of him as the 'potent factor in the second and final stage of tbe Oxford Movement. Ward found the movement Anglican —he left it Roman. It was through him in a great measure that it changed its skin ; and the lifeless coil which it then cast aside has since served as the covering in which the High Church Party has masqueraded as Catholic.' Mr. Ward was married in March, 1845, to Miss Wingfield, daughter of the Prebendary of Worcester and Canon of York, a lady who was an ardent Puseyite and a disciple of Oakeley, and in the following September husband and wife wero both received into the Roman Catholic Church. They resided at Old Hall, near Ware, in the South of England, where Miss Ward was born. At the age of sixteen she entered the Dominican Order of Nuns at Stone, Staffordshire, where she professed, taking the name in religion of Mary Magdalen de Pazzio, and in 1883, when a branoh of the Order was eatablished here, Sister Mary Magdalen was one of the pioneers. She had been thirty years in religion when she died. One of her brothers, Mr. Wilfrid Ward, married a niece of the present Duke of Norfolk ; while Mr. Greaville Ward, who is now in possession of the family estates, married a niece of Lord Dormer, whose own daughter is Provincial of the Order of Dominicans in England. Mr. Wilfrid Ward is well known in literary circles. Besides writing for the Fortnightly Review he will be remembered as one who was engaged in the triangular literary duel which was fought between Huxley, Spencer, and Ward. Two remarkable books, the products of his pen, are ' William George Ward and the Oxford Movement' and 'William George Ward and the Catholic Revival, in which he gave the history of the Tractarian Movement and the prominent part whioh hia father took in that connection. In the latter book are several extracts from the reminiscences of his eldest daughter Mary — now (1893) for close upon thirty years a nun.' Before she went into the convent she was his constant companion for five years in his leisure hours, and always attributed her early vocation to the religious life in great measure to his influence. She wrote of her father that the two most striking features of his character, as I remember him, were first, simplicity; second, humility. His simplicity was some thing so unlike what is generally met with that I hould think it must have taken those who first made his acquaintance some time to understand it. It consisted chiefly of the fact that he always seemed to live in the presence of God, and that His glory was a thing to be desired with so much passion that the longing for it seemed to swallow up smaller interests.' Mr. Ward's wish was that his daughters should be nuns and his sons priests. His two eldest daughters both became nuns — Mary in 1863, at Stone, and a little later Agnes, who joined the community of Benedictines at Oulton, in Stafforshire | Sister Mary Josephine DOLANDied 02 September 1990
