Early on Friday, December 29, the death occurred of Mother Mary Teresa Hearne, who for more than half a century was the leader of the Sisters of Mercy in Deloraine.
On Sunday, December 31, Solemn Requiem Mass was offered in the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Deloraine, from which the funeral then left for the Deloraine cemetery.  Mary Hearn was born at Chilton, Victoria, on July 29, 1865, and baptised on the Feast of the Assumption. Educated by the Loreto Nuns in Ballarat, she was the first student in their Teachers' Training College and taught for some years in Ballarat before leaving her home and family to join the Sisters of Mercy in Goulburn, N.S.W..
where she pronounced her vows on May 24, 1888.  When, in 1895, Archdeacon Beechinor applied to Goulburn for a community of Sisters of Mercy for Deloraine, Sister Mary Teresa was one of the four who volunteered to come. From the moment of her arrival in Tasmania she identified herself with Deloraine.  Endowed with remarkable powers of discipline and with a broad, cultured mind, Mother Teresa, for a long period achieved great success with the secondary classes in the College of Our Lady of Mercy, and exercised great and lasting spiritual influence on all those who passed through her hands. A year after celebrating the diamond jubilee of her religious profession, she fell and broke her left hip. For 12 months, she was nursed by the Sisters of Charity in St. Vincent's Hospital, Launceston, before returning to her convent home in Deloraine, where she remained a semi-invalid until a second accident occurred on December 15.  During the Requiem Mass, Miss Mary Fitzpatrick played the organ and the choir sang extracts from the Mass and thc hymn, "Nearer My God To Thee." In his address to the parishioners, Rev. Father Denis Murphy, P.P., spoke of

Father Shaw, of Devonport, Rev. Father. Scarfe, of Burnie, and Rev. Father M'Donald, of Launceston, assisted at thc interment in the Deloraine cemetery, in the presence of a large concourse of mourners.
