She was born in County Cork, and was educated at schools in that county be fore she departed for Tasmania. After a few years in Tasmania she came to Adelaide and entered the convent which had just been opened. When her profession was completed she left to teach in Gawier, Kadina, and other country centres. On returning to the provincial headquarters she taught for many years in Kensington, and at one time at the Burnside Orphanage. She was subject to a condition which rendered her liable to go into nervous trances. The evidence suggests that she was rather simple and open to suggestion and hence, likely to take to heart and act upon anything presented to her by an important hero image.
Professed in August 1869.
Ceased wearing the habit during the excommunication period and did not return.
Dismissed from the Institute in 1872.
Married Thomas O'DONOGHUE at Kapunda in July 1877 and had two sons.
Died in 1924.

The friends of Sister Mary Doleres will regret to hear of her death, which occurred at St. Joseph's Convent, Kensington, on Sunday, November 12, the immediate
cause of death being an inward complaint which followed an attack of influenza, although the deceased nun had been in delicate health during the last few years. The deceased, who was in her 35th year, came to this colony from Balmain, New South Wales, where her parents reside, remarks the "Southern Cross." She was at one time engaged in teaching at the Russell street school, but failing health compelled her to transfer to Pekina. Later on she went to North Adelaide, where she was teaching until recently. She had been ailing for the last three months, and towards the end snffered greatly, but she bore up most patiently. Her nature was most amiable, and her gentleness won the | hearts of the children whose privilege it was to be instructed by her. Requiem mass was celebrated on Monday. Dr. Byrne officiating in the absence of the Archbishop. The Requiem was most impressively chanted by the Very Rev. P. Hurley. Prior Spence. 0.P.. Fathers Adamson and McGratti. The funeral took place on Monday, the remains being interred in the cemetery of the order at Mitcham. The burial sevice was performed by Father Alfred. C.P.

DEATH OF A SISTER OF ST. JOSEPH.
On Wednesday night Miss Margaret Clifford, who was known in religion as Sister Mary Zita, died at the Convent, Kensington. The deceased lady suffered from consumption, and was attended during her illness by Drs. Marten and Von Lukowitz, and the Rev. Father Dietel, S.J. administered Extreme Unction. Sister Zita had been associated with the order for 21 years, and taught in the Catholic schools at Penola, Kadina and Gawler, and in some of the city and suberban schools.
The sister's parents were born in Limerick, but when she was quite a girl they died in this colony. Miss Clifford joined the sisters of St. Joseph when she was only 14 years of age, and she has two sisters -Sisters Mary Dominic and Mary Uladins, who are stationed at the Burra and Hectorville respectively -still connected with the order. On Friday morning the office for the dead was chanted, and solemn Requiem mass offered a the the convent oratory for the repose of the soul of the late sister.
Father Dietel Offered the holy sacrifice. There were present his Grace the Archbishop of Adelaide (the Most Rev. Dr. O'Reily), the Very Rev. Archpriest Nevin, the Ven. Archdeacon Russell, the Very. Rev. Dean Kennedy, Fathers G F O'Neil, William, F. Collier, J Healey, P Hurley, W. McEvoy, J Martin, To Cosgrove, T. O'Brien, S.J. and A Handel. His Grace pronounced the absolution at the bier, which was covered with the floral offerings of the numerous friends of Sister Zita. At the close of the obsequies the funeral took place at the Mitcham Cemetery.

Sister Hedwig had been associated with charitable work at the refuge for 20 years, during the last 12 or 13 of which she was second in charge of the institution. She took a capable part in the management of its affairs and was much loved by the inmates and the public who knew of her good deeds. Sister Hedwig was like a mother to those unfortunates who sought the shelter of the refuge, and her presence will be greatly missed there. She came originally from Ballarat. A Requiem high mass will be held at St Raphael's Church this morning, at which the Archbishop of Adelaide (Most Rev Dr. Spence) will preside. |

Sister Cyprian was greatly beloved for her good deeds amongst the poor and the sick. Amongst children she was very popular. She was one of the first Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sacred Heart, who commenced teaching at Hindmarsh about 25 years ago, and her death is the first at the local convent. She trained the choir at St. Saviour's Church and led the singing with success, and she was equally successful in assisting in the training of the children attending St. Joseph's day school for the concerts given by them on various occasions. Sister Cyprian arrived with her parents from Ireland in Western Australia, where she lived for about sixteen years. Subsequently she came to South Australia, and in 1878 entered the convent of St. Joseph and the Sacred Heart, at Kensington She subsequently went to Port Augusta and Gawler, and for the past 25 years she had been as Hindmarsh.

Flora, late of St. Joseph's Convent, Kooringa, which occurred at Adelaide on May 13th. The late Sister's association with Burra is an old one as it is over forty years ago since she first came to the town, when what is now known as Lewis' schoolroom was the R. C. Convent School. She afterwards left for a time but about twenty seven years ago returned and remained here until a few months ago when acting on the advice of htr medical adviser, she gave up her strenuous duties here to take a much needed rest. Sister Flora was a woman with a beautiful disposition, and a true friend to all. Not only do the adherents of her own church revere her memory but all sections of the community held her in the highest regard. She was 76 years of age, and a native of County Clare, Ireland. DEATH OF PROMINENT CONVENT LEADER
SISTER MARY STANISLAUS DOYLE, who died afr Sacred Heart Convent, New Town, on Saturday, had been Superior of convents at Ulverstone, Zeehan, Forth, Devonport, Westbury, Cygnet, and Franklin.
SISTER STANISLAUS was In her 85th year and the 65th year of her service in the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph. She was born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1862, and at an
early age came to Australia with her parents and settled near Bathurst (NSW).
She was one of four sisters who volunteered to open a school at Westbury and they arrived there in May, 1887. In 1938 she opened the new convent and juniorate at Newstead, Launceston, for the training of teachers for the Order. She was Superior-General of the Order in 1920 and 1929.
The funeral took place on Monday. Requiem Mass was celebrated by Dean Green at the Sacred Heart Church, New Town. The church was crowded. Archdeacon T. J.
O'Donnell preached. There was a large attendance at the Cornelian Bay cemetery in the afternoon. Archdeacon O'Donnell, assisted by Dean Green, conducted
the service. Among those present were Sisters of St. Joseph from New Town, Cygnet, Franklin, Tunnack, Colebrook, Richmond, and Moonah, representatives of .the Presentation Sisters (St. Mary's College), and the Sisters of Charity (St. Joseph's), and clergy from many parts of Tasmania.

Sister Mary Joseph was a member of the pioneering band of the Order in Queensland and New Zealand. She also taught in South Australia, For the past 20 years she was superior at Penrith, Annandale, and Camperdown. The Very Rev. Father R. P. Denny (Glenelg, South Australia) and Mr. W. J. Denny, a foimcr Attorney-General in two Labour Ministries in South Australia are nephews of Sister Mary Joseph. The funeral took place on Tuesday morning after Requiem Masses celebrated by the Revs. Dr. L. Rumble, M.S.C., and L. OBITUARY.
Sister Teresa, who died in New South Wales on Wednesday, was connected with the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph in this State. She left Adelaide on August 28, accompanied by Sister Mary Claude (provincial of the order) to attend the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney, but on the way met with an accident at the Harden railway station, New South Wales, when she fell from a carriage and sustained severe injuries, which necessitated her removal to the Harden-Murramburra District Hospital.
It is not known how the accident occurred, but Sister Teresa fell between the moving train and the platform, and although her injuries were terrible, she retained consciousness, and was able to give her family name, Catherine Christina Eickhoff, which was the same as her mother's.
She was a native of Adelaide and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Andrew Eicklioff. who came to South Australia from Westphalia, Germany, in the early forties, and were among the first Roman Catholics to settle in the State.
Sister Teresa was born on November 4, 1852, and early in life manifested a deep religious disposition, which developed under the spiritual guidance of the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods. At the age of 21 she began her novitiate in order to enter the newly-founded order of the Sisters of St Joseph. The order, which at that time was purely a South Australian one, had been instituted by Mother Mary McKillop of the Cross, who was a sister of the Rev. Donald McKillop, SJ, of Norwood. Since then the order has spread into the other States, and the Mother House is at North Sydney. Sister Teresa devoted her whole life to the work of Raman Catholic education, especially musical education. After serving her novitiate at Kadina she laboured at the Port Augusta, Clare, Kapunda, Gawler, Willunga, North Adelaide, and Russell-street and Pirie street schools, and at Kensington. Her winsome disposition endeared her to her pupils, and resulted in many life long friendships. In 1923 she celebrated her jubilee as a member of the order, and her three nephew priests—the Revs. Father F. J. Gatzemeyer, of Strathalbyn; Father J. A. Gatzemeyer, administrator of St. Francis Xaviers Cathedral; and Father F. Gatzemeyer, of Salisbury—officiated at the mass at the college, Kensington, in connection with the event. Mr. B. J. Gatzemeyer, of Adelaide, is also a nephew, and brother to the three priests. Her two surviving sisters ate Mrs. F. F. Gatzemeyer and Miss Cecilia A. Eickhoff, of Adelaide. Mrs. Theodore Behrens, of Norwood, another sister, died a few years ago. Mr. H. A. Behrens is a nephew. A solemn office for the dead -and requiem mass will be celebrated this morning at the chapel of the Mother House of the order North Sydney, and the funeral will be at Gore Hill Cemetery. OBITUARY SISTER M. J. GALLAGHER The Sisters of St. Joseph, North Goulburn, suffered a severe loss recently In the death of Sister Mary John Gallagher. Mother John was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. I. Gallagher, of Krambach and Ryde, and was one of a family of 11, five of whom gave their lives to God in the service of religion. Sister John was an active teacher up to a few months before her death. She had had charge of the Sacred Heart School, North Goulburn and schools at Temora, Binalong and Narrandera. A Solemn Requiem Mass for the repose of Mother John's soul was offered in the Convent Chapel, North Goulburn, by the Very Rev. Fr. S. O'Donnell. Present also were several priests of the Archdiocese, members of the Sisters of Mercy and of St. John of God and relations of Mother John. The Requiem was sung, by Pineleigh Novitiate Choir. The funeral proceeded to Kenmore Cemetery where the "Benedictus" , was sung by the assembled clergy. Fr. O'Donnell officiated at the graveside. |

Dr Higgins presided The Rev Father McEnroe, S J , was the celebrant, Rev Father Brennan, S J , deacon Rev Father Cleary, S J , subdeacon , and the Rev Dr O'Brien and Rev Father Conway were the chanters. The following clergy were also present -Revs Dr Carroll, V G , Fathers Murley, S M , Giniaty, S M , Seraph, O P , Joyce, 0 S F, Mullan, 0 S F, Condon, and B. Sheridan. Sister Gunn was a daughter of Mr J M Gunn, an old resident of Parramatta. She was born at Bathurst, and died on Thursday morning of consumption, in the fortieth year of her age. For about 20 years she had been a member of the Order of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Her remains were interred yesterday at Gore's Hill, Dr Carroll and the Rev Father Cleary conducting the solemn funeral |

She was one of the oldest members of the Order of St. Joseph (says the "Southern Cross"), having joined it soon after its establishment in South Australia by Mother Mary of the Cross more than 60 years ago. It was only in 1927 that the late sister celebrated the diamond jubilee of her religious profession, on which occasion she was visited by the apostolic delegate, and received his blessing. She was born in England, and was a daughter of Mr. H. W. Hayman, who for many years was a superintending officer of the South Australian Railway Department. |

The death of Miss Howard, known in religion as Sister Mary Ephrem, of the teaching order of St. Joseph, occurred at the Convent Port Adelaide, on Tuesday morning. After spending a year's novitiate at the Kensington Retreat she was stationed at the Port, where she has been engaged in the tuition of the young for nearly 16 years. During the last three years Sister Ephrem has been in a poor state of health and consumption hastened her demise. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Howard, of Petersburg. Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Port, at 6 o'clock' on Wednesday morning, after which the body was removed to the Kensington Convent. Solemn requiem mass for the repose of the soul of the dead sister was offered at 10 o'clock by Father Conies. His Grace the Archbishop presided and there were also present Fathers Bescbauer, S.J. Dietel, S.J., Haendls, S.J.. O'Brien. S.J., Williams, F. O'Neill. Murphy, Kendelen, 0.C.C., and Huriey. At the close Dr. O'Reily pronounced the absolute at the bier. The remains were then conveyed to the convent cemetery at Mitcham for interment. The first mourning coach was occupied by tho two sisters and two brothers and sisters-inlaw of the deceased lady, and several friends also journeyed to the burial ground. Father Williams lead the burial service. |

Sister Mary Victor Lane, who died at St Marthas Home, Leichhardt, recently, was one of the pioneer members of the Congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph She was born at Ipswich Queensland, in 1858, and joined the Order, 13 years after it had been in existence at Adelaide. She was personally associated with the foundress of the Order, Mother Mary of the Cross. She was stationed for short periods at Bungendore, Lithgow, and Hunter s Hill, and was in charge of St Fiacre's School, Leichhardt. For 17 years, Sister Mary Victor had charge of the South Australian province of the Order, and for eight years was Superior of the Fullerton Refuge near Parkside Adelaide Last year, she celebrated the golden jubilee of her profession. After a Solemn Office and Requiem Mass in the convent chapel at St Martha's Home, the funeral took place at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery. Sister Mary Bernadine Ledwege, who died at St. Joseph's Refuge, Fullarton, on the 3rd inst. had a remarkable career in the work of rescuing the fallen and kindred words of mercy. Forty eight years of her relisious life were thus spent, and she was the most loving and loved of the now bereaved community at Fullarton. For many years she was in charge at the Refuge, and when her physical infirmity became so great as to necessitate the use of an invalid chair, and she was relieved of the onerous office of superior, she continued to fill her accustomed place in the ironing room, where she spent her days in counselling the inmates. She maintained her mentality up to the last, and bore her sufferings with a cheerfulness that was an inspiration to all who had the privilege of coming in contact with her. Sister Bernadine, who was in her 72nd years, was a native of Morphett Vale. Her parents were old and respected residends of that place. Her sister Mars. Avage (Miss Bridget Ledwege) was the sole woman survivior of the ill-fated Admella. Her neice, Sister Mary Delores, is a member of the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph at Kensington.

DEATH OF THE FOUNDER.
Mother Mary of the Cross, founder and first superior of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, died on Sunday morning at St. Joseph's Convent, Mount-street, North Sydney, after eight years of illness. She was born on January 16, 1842, in Melbourne. Her father, the late Mr. Alexander McKillop, was a member of a well-known Highland family, who came to Australia in the early days, and first settled in Sydney.
In Penola, South Australia, Mother Mary met the late Father Julian E. Tennison Woods, a "bush missionary." To the young girl, as she was then, he often spoke of the necessity for a school in his district, and finally, in 1866, in a stable at Penola, she and two or three companions opened one. This was the foundation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart. In 1867 the novitiate was established in Adelaide, and in August of that year Mother Mary made her religious profession. The institute, though begun under lowly conditions and with no resources behind it, spread rapidly. Five years later there were 120 members. In 1869 a foundation was projected in Queensland, and the sisters begged their fares from one colony to the next, the branch being established in the face of many trials and privations. In 1873 Mother Mary went to Rome to, submit the rule of her institute to the propaganda, and there she received the Papal blessing, the approbation of the Pope (Pius IX.) being given to the rule the following year. As it was not accepted by the Bishops of Bathurst and Queensland, the sisters of Bathurst who accepted the constitutions returned to Adelaide, the remainder forming a separate community under the guidance of Bishop Quinn. The Queensland sisters accepted an invitation from the late Archbishop Vaughan to
establish themselves in the archdiocese of Sydney, and also a request from the late Dr. Torreggiani to begin work in the diocese of Armidale. In 1879 the sisters opened a House of Providence in Cumberland-street, Sydney, and schools were quickly established in many of the country towns. A novitiate was established at Cumberland-street. Later on it was transferred to North Sydney, where it is now the mother house of the congregation, a decree of the sacred congregation of propaganda having in 1888 authorised the institute to be erected into a congregation, having the mother house in Sydney. In this convent, which is one of the finest in Australia, Mother Mary resided for many years. The congregation also made good progress in South Australia. Early in the eighties the sisters were invited to New Zealand, and are now established in the dioceses of Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin ; also in the archdiocese of Wellington. In the Commonwealth there are foundations now in New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and Queensland. Altogether 750 sisters have been admitted to the congregation during the life-time of its foundress. While on a visit to New Zealand in 1902 Mother Mary was stricken with her severe illness. She improved sufficiently to enable her being removed to Sydney. During the long and
painful years that concluded her life she never ceased to evince the liveliest interest in the welfare of her congregation. She has recorded of her work that she regularly
visited every convent of her order, with the exception of a few of the later established, and knew personally every sister. Of her brothers and sisters two survive her—Father Donald McKillop, S.J., and Miss Annie McKillop. Her mother was lost in the wreck of the steamer Lye-ee-moon in 1886.
The solemn office of requiem mass will be celebrated at half-past 10 o'clock today at Ridge-street. Cardinal Moran will preside.

The remains of the demised Sister were removed to the Kensington Convent, where solemn Requiem mass was celebrated on Monday. The internment afterwards took place in the cemetery of the order at Mitcham. the burial service being performed by Father Kevin, C.l., assisted by Very Rev. P. Hurley. The deceased nun, who was 27 years of age, came to this colony from Victoria, where her parents, who were present at the funeral, reside. Prior to her death Sister Ethelreda had been engaged in teaching at the Stanley-street school. |

JOSEPH On Sunday Evening Sister De Paul, of the Sisters of St. Joseph, North Adealide, died. The deceased lady, who had been over 27 years in the community, devoted most of her life to the care of orphans, and in this work she displayed the loving care and kindness characteristic of the female orders of the Roman Catholic Church. Of late Sister De Paul taught in the Stanley street school, North Adelaide, and succumbed to a lung trouble, from which she had suffered for years. Requiem masses for the repose of the soul of the sister were celebrated at Stanley Street on Monday morning by Father Andrew, C.P., and Dean Kennedy, after which the body was removed to the convent at Kensington. This morning requiem mass will be offered in the convent chapel, over which the Archbishop will preside. The remains will be interred in the Mitcham Cemetery. |

She was a gentle nun who had been a contemporary nun of Mother Mary MacKillop for 40 years, through all her troubled times. Kensington, on Tuesday, of Sister Mary Ignatius. She had been there 42 years, and was one of the oldest sisters in South Australia, having come to the State in its early days. She was most highly esteemed, not only by those at the convent, but by all who knew her outside, in her work of collecting for the refuge. Requiem mass was celebrated in the convent chapel on Wednesday morning, and the funeral left immediately afterwards for the Mitcham Cemetery. The Rev. Prior Spence and 16 priests attended the funeral rites. |

Professed her vows in August 1868 Went from Adelaide to Queensland in June 1875 Appointed Provincial after Chapter of 1875 Died in North Sydney April 1904 Aged 71 years Advertister Saturday 14 May 1904 page 10 Sister Josephine, of the order of St. Joseph, died in Sydney recently. She was a sister of Mr. McMullen, an Adelaide architect, and joined the sisterhood in this city. When the founder (the late Rev. Father Tenison Woods) was planning how to bring the first sisters to Adelaide, Miss McMullen rented a cottage, which she furnished in very plain style as a home for the two pioneer sisters. They were already teaching in the South East district, where Father Woods had lived the previous ten years. On the arrival of Mother Mary and her companion, Miss McMullen gave them the cottage and its contents, and asked to be received as a postulant. Since then she has filled important offices in Adelaide, in Queensland and in Armidale (N.S.W.), from which latter place she was called to Sydney to be the procuratrix-general (or bursar) of the congregation, which office she filled to the last. Her kindness and charity were well known to many in Australia. She died a most peaceful death on the patronage of St. Joseph, surrounded by her sisters. Sister Josephine was a native of the City of Cork, and was 74 years of age. She spent 37 years in St. Joseph's Convent. |

Entered the Institute November 1870 Professed her vows July 1872 Worked as a teacher until she moved to the Providence in about 1890. Hilda's strong point was her ability to handle the numerous down and out men who used to call at the Providence in search of a meal. She became something of a legend in the West End of the city of Adelaide and her presences was sadly missed when she was obliged to relinquish her work becasue of advancing age and ill health. Casimir Mesklll, Assistant-General of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, whose death occurred recently at the Mother House of the Order in North Sydney, was for 67 years a Sister of Sir Joseph. Mother Casimir was bom at Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, 83 years ago. She entered the Order in 1869. After 10 years in various country centres in South Australia, Mother Casimir came to Sydney In 1880. For five years she was stationed at Inverell, and subsequently was sent to Auckland, New Zealand, to open a new house of the Order. In 1899 she was appointed provincial at Armidale, and returned from there to Sydney to take charge of the Sydney Novitiate. For the past l8 years she filled the position of Assistant-General of the Sisters of St. Joseph. After a Solemn Office and Requiem Mass in St. Joseph's Memorial Chapel, the interment took place in the Gore Hill cemetery. The burial service was read by the Rev. Father J. Gates, S.J. |

LATE SISTER MARY MICHAELO'BRIEN. The death occurred during the week of Sister Mary Michael O'Brien at the Convent of tho Sacred Heart, New Town. Sister Mary Michael was well known throughout Tasmania, and taught at convents at Franklin, Cygnet, Ulverstone, Westbury, and Moonah. She was born near Bathurst, New South Wales, and took the veil in the order of St. Joseph 34 years ago. She was a highly qualified teacher, and was held in deep affection by all children who came under her charge. A solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday, and the remains interred in the ground reserved for the Sisters of St. Joseph at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. |

Kensington, on Saturday, had spent 60 years in the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph, which she entered in Brisbane at the age of 22. She was born in Leeds, England, and came to Australia as a child. Within a year of her enterting the order she was transferred to South Australia, where she spent some time teaching in the various schoois of the order, including Port Adelaide and Pirie street. She also spent some time teaching in the northern districts of New South Wales before faking charge of the Foundling Home, Broadireadows (Vic), where she remained for 20 years. She relinquished this position about four rears ago, owing to the breakdown of her health, and had since then been performing light duties and resting at the Kensington Convent. Mrs. A. Edwards, of Noora, was a sister. |

The death of Sister Mary Hyacinth ( Quinlan ) at the Sacred Heart Convent, New Town, yesterday removes one of the oldest surviving, members of the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph. She had a meritorious career in the service of the Church. She was born In South Australia in 1852, and entered the Order of the Sisters of St. Joseph, in 1868 very soon after the Order was founded by Father Julian Tenison Woods. She founded a first Community of the Sisters of St. Joseph in New South Wales, near tho town of Bathurst three years later. After firmly establishing the Order in New South Wales, where the Mother House now exercises jurisdiction over 2,000 sisters throughout Australia, she was invited by the Archbishop of Wellington to establish a foundation in New Zealand. Her work in the Dominion was so successful that today the Sacred Heart Convent at Wanganui ls regarded among the most flourishing and efficient secondary schools in tho Southern Hemisphere. In 1892 Sister Mary Hyacinth came to Tasmania, and for many years occupied the position of Sister Guardian. The late Sister Hyacinth four years ago celebrated the diamond jubilee of her profession. She was living In retirement at the Mother House at New Town. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at the Sacred Heart Church tomorrow morning immediately before the funeral. |

One of the most distinguished teachers of the Sisters of St. Joseph died in Hobart on Sunday. She was Sister Gabriel Reidy, who had spent nearly 50 years in the order. Born near Ballarat (Vic.), she joined the sisters at Oatlands in 1899. Archbishop Delany sent her to the training college of Loretto at Albert Park (Melbourne), where she did a two year course.
Sister Reidy was a member of the first community that opened the New Town school in 1907. She had charge of the higher classes and the training of the young teachers, and remained there for 25 years. In 1932 she opened the new school of St. Therese at Moonah, and in 1938 went in charge to the Ulverstone school. She returned to Moonah in 1944, and was there until her death.
The funeral took place on Monday with Requiem Mass at New Town celebrated by the Rev W. McCarthy. The Vicar-General (Archdeacon Atkinson) presided, and the
sermon was preached by Archdeacon T. J. O'Donnell. The burial took place at Cornelian Bay, where the last prayers were read by Monsignor Cullen, assisted by priests.
The funeral was carried out by P. J. Keating and Co.

The deceased left Goulburn by the midnight train on Thursday night. She was not missed till the train reached Sydney, when her luggage was found in a first class carriage. There wore no signs of a struggle in the compartment.
The only theory about her death is that she threw herself out of the train. The railway authorities, however, think tbat it was almost impossible for her to have opened the door herself. It is not known if anyone occupied the compartment with her.
Deceased was seen into the train at Goulburn by two Sisters of St. Joseph. She was then in the best of health. She did not show any lack of spirits.
Miss Ryan was a native of Ireland. She arrived here three years ago in company with five other ladies, all of whom joined religious orders. It is understood that she was coming to Sydney to take a situation as a governess. In the absenoe of any motive her death is a most mysterious affair. The view of the police is that the case is one of suicide.

Buried Mitcham Order of St. Joseph's Lawn Cemetery Catherine SILVER, known in religious orders as Sister Mary Gilbert, was born in Rosewater South Australia on 13 January 1881 and baptised on 23 January 1881 at St Mary’s Church in Port Adelaide South Australia, the second child and only daughter of Joseph SILVER (1836 – 1885) and his wife Johanna nee O’MEARA (1856 – 1930). Catherine entered the Order of St Joseph on 19 December 1899 in East Melbourne Victoria and received her novitiate habit on 19 March 1901 in Melbourne. She professed her vows in Melbourne on 19 March 1902 and took her perpetual vows there on 7 July 1912. Sister Mary Gilbert undertook duties as a nurse and lived and worked in the Order’s convents at Surrey Hills New South Wales, in East Melbourne, Victoria and later in Kensington South Australia. Whilst living at the convent in North Sydney in the early years of her service, she helped to nurse the Order’s Foundress, Mother Mary of the Cross. Sister Mary Gilbert died after a long illness on 28 October 1959 at Sisters of St Joseph’s Convent Kensington South Australia and is buried in the Order’s Lawn Cemetery at Mitcham South Australia. Remained in Western Australia in 1891 when the others returned. In January 1905 she became ill with a cancer that went into remission after she had spent a short time in hospital. Remission was short lived. Died in 15th October 1905 at the St. John of God Hospital, Kalgoorlie, almost 31 years to the day that she left her homeland in Ireland, Aged 56 years. Kalgoorlie Western Argus Tuesday 17 October 1905 page 15 Death of the Rev. Mother MaryUrsula. SUPERIORESS OF ST. JOSEPH'S CONVENT. It will be learned with regret by all sections of the community in Boulder and Kalgoorlie that the Rev. Mother Mary Ursula, one of the pioneer nuns in Boulder, died on Sunday morning in St. John of God's Hospital. The deceased came from Ireland to South Australia, and when her order, St. Joseph's, was being established in West Australia, she bore her share of the pioneering discomforts and labours. After establishing the order at Northampton and Geraldton, she came to Boulder and started the school at Kamballie. The life of those days was rough, but the deceased and her self-sacrificing companions bore their privations with fortrtude, and stamped their character upon the rising generation of the district. When Boulder townsite. was surveyed a corrugated iron convent was erected to replace the hessian camps at KambalIie, but as the population increased and more schools and teachers were required, the convent did not meet requirements, and the present two-storey brick building was put in hand. The privations of the early days had broken the deceased lady's constitution months ago, but it was only recently that it was found necessary to send her into the hospital, where it was ascertained that she was suffering from an internal cancer, and that her case was hopeless. She never rallied, and passed away Sunday from a general break up of the system. The deceased lady was a native of County Kildare, Ireland, and in the world was known as Miss Tynan. Some 32 years ago the foundress of the order of St. Joseph went to Ireland to secure postulants for the Australian mission, and the deceased lady and 20 companions volunteered. For the next 13 years she was occupied in developing the minds of the youth and relieving the wants of the poor and needy in and around North Adelaide. Eighteen years ago she came to West Australia, and since then she has pioneered many rising settlements in the cause of religion and education. |

LITHGOW, Wednesday.
Last night there died at Lithgow Convent Mother Bernard Walsh, superior-general of the order of St Josoph of the Sacred Heart in Australia. Deceased came here last Saturday. She was then suffering from cold on the lungs Dr Asher was called in on Monday, and diagnosed the case as acute pneumonia with heart weakness. This assumed an aggravated form yesterday, and she expired about midnight. The body will be sent by the mail train to-night to the house of the order at North Sydney, where a requiem Mass will be celebrated on Friday morning. Deceased, who was 60 years old, was born in the county of Galway, Ireland. She joined the order of St Joseph in Adelaide 31 years ago, and has been superior-general for the past 11 years She has two married sisters in Victoria and three nephews in South Australia among the latter being Mr J McMahon Glynn, MP, and late Convention delegate. Many messages of sympathy and regret were received at the local convent today.

She joined the order of St. Joseph at Adelaide 30 years ago, and has been superior-general at Lithgow for 14 years. She has three nephews resident in South Australia, among them being Mr. P. McMahon Glynn, M.P., Dr. Glynn, of Kapunda, and another'doctor. She has two married sisters in Victoria. Her remains will be sent tonight to the Mother House of the order at North Sydney, where requiem mass will be held on Friday. The cause of death was pneumonia, aggravated by heart trouble.
Arrived in Australia in Melbourne, date uncertain.

Daughter of James Dominic WOODS and Catherine nee GRIFFIN Entered the order in April 1869 aged 14 years and 7 months and soon afterwards became blind. The blindness came on gradually. She had quite lost the sight of one eye when she came into the Institution, and the other was weak. Before joining she could at times see sufficently well to go about by herself. There were times when her eyesight was worse. Professed her vows in September 1870. Ceased wearing the habit during the excommunication period but later resumed. Spent most of her life in Adelaide where she gave religious instruction to adults and children. Buried Mitcham Order of St. Joseph's Lawn Cemetery Brisbane Courier Friday 3 August 1928 Woman's Great Fortitude. A story of extraordinary fortitude is recalled by the recent death in Adelaide, at the age of 74 years, of a remarkable woman, Sister Mary Mechtilde, of the Order of St. Joseph. A niece of Rev. Julian Tennison Woods, she, at the age of 15, in 1869, joined the then newly-founded Sisters of St. Joseph. While she was still young an unfortunate accident resulted In Sister Mechtilde's losing an eye, and a few years later total blindness resulted, and both eyes had to be removed. An amazing story is related of her heroic fortitude in the face of the agonising operations she had to undergo. She refused to allow the surgeon to administer an anaesthetic, and sat in a chair holding her mother's hand. This was an early demonstration of her wonderful courage and dauntless strength of will. It was during the years following on her blindness that Sister Mechtilde became so widely known -throughout South Australia. Never were her hands idle. With pliers, wire, and beads she deftly fashioned rosary beads. She made umbrellas, linen bags, aud even boots for the sisters, and, finally, bent her energies to joinery work, even making chairs and tables. A notable example of her work Is the beautiful tabernacle In the convent oratory. In her workroom at the convent were all manners of carpenters' and machinists' tools. |
