28J. A child left an orphan at the age of eleven, he said, afterward founded the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. Catherine McCautey, born near Dublin in 1787, was that foundress.  With wealth in her possession she might have chosen a life of comfort and luxury, but it was her delight to spend and be spent in the relief of poverty and distress.  She soon perceived the need of organisation, so sought and found congenial companions among the charitable women of Dublin and erected a building in that city, which was blessed by the Archbishop, who named It the Institute of Our Lady of Mercy. It served as a home for unemployed women, a school for the poor,
and a house for orphan children.  Catherine and her companions were, so far. lay workers, and not members of a religious order. They were not in the world, and not out of it, and their position was at times anomalous.  Eventually their plans for the establishment of a new order were approved by the Archbishop of Dublin and endorsed at

Today the Order had many convents in Ireland, England, Scotland, and was found in North and South America, Africa. Australia, and New Zealand, the number of Sisters of Mercy now being 35.000.

It was just fifty years since the pioneer sisters landed in South Australia from Buenos Ayres. They came at the invitation of the then Catholic Bishop of Adelaide (Most Rev. Dr. Reynolds)  Of the 24 pioneer sisters, six were still living—four in Angas-street, one in Mount Gambier, and one in Buenos Ayres.  There was In Buenos Ayres today a foundation established from Mount Gambier in 1890 by five sisters, with three branch houses in other parts of the Argentine. In South Australia there were eight houses (including Mount Gambier, Millicent  and Narracoorte),  with 76 sisters, who had approximately 1,300 children, 120 of whom were in the Goodwood Orphanage, under their care.  Other convents were at Parkside, Henley Beach, and Victor Harbour.
Thanksgiving- and Congratulation The present occasion called for thanks giving and congratulation for the sisters, the Church, the Catholic people, and the State and Commonwealth of Australia.  Catholics here tendered their respectful congratulations on the results of 50 years' work, only a fraction of  which made itself visible to the casual observer.  The sisters rose early and labored hard. They taught the children the way to heaven, tenderly guarded and reared the orphans committed to their care, and instructed the lgnorant to the faith.  In the realm of higher education, music, and the arts, the sisters excelled, and in order that bodily development might not be overlooked, they had classes for physical culture and athletics.  Catholic parents were grateful for all this, and happy at the present opportunity to express their heart
lelt thanks.  The Church had reason to congratulate itself, ior the sisters had trained Catholic children in religion and virtue, by word and example.  They taught them to obey their parents, to be just and honest, good and true—a far more valuable and enduring training that merely secular education which ignored the soul, and forget about the Almighty God gave to man all his gifts of body and mind.
Working for the State and Commonwealth had every reason to join the chorus of praise and acclamation to-day.  In the matter of finance alone, the sisters had shouldered a burden of many thousands of pounds which, but for them, would have had to come from the coffers of the Slate.  A simple calculation showed that annually that saving to the State was £13,000, to which must be the up keep of 120 orphans. Such a religious training as the sisters gave contributed to the wellbeing of the community.

Despite being principal and member of the governing council of the community, whith all the accompanying administrative tasks, she taught a full day's school.  Almost singlehandedly she taught the Junior and Senior classes.  Her pupils thought her a wonderful teacher, extremely just yet kind and onsiderate.  She was endowed with much commonsense, and a contagious enthusiasm.  Together with her rather gruff voice, rapid speech, and swarthy complexion, made her somewhat awesome to some of her pupils, but many old scholars thought of her as a wonderful woman.

Sister Kathrine Conley was looking forward to the times she would spend with her family.  they would soon join her on 12 December 1981 to help celebrate Sister Katherine's Silver Jubilee - 25 years of religious profession as a Sister of Mercy.  Sister Kathrine Conley was reared in Snowtown and she frequented the precincts of St. Canice's Church in her early childhood.  she was the eldest in a family of four children.  Her brother was William and her two sisters were Moyra and Joanne; and these were the family of Mr. and Mrs. Oswald P. Conley who had been in business in Snowtown for many years until they left in 1952 to reside in Gawler (Mr. Conley died in 1977),  Sister Kathrine was asked to supply some information about herself, to be put into this Snowtown Church Centenary book, which she graciously consented to do.  At the time that Sister Katherine agreed to this request, she was living in The Convent of Mercy, Henley Beach.  The following is Sister Kathrine's own story.
Kathrine Conley attended the Snowtown Area School until she attained second year high school.  She then went to Adelaide and became a boarder at St. Aloysius' College.  She completed her schooling there, and at the Erindale Mercy Juniorate, and she gained her Teacher's Certificate from the Adelaide Teacher's College in 1953.  In 1954 Kathrine joined the Sisters of Mercy and began teaching at St. Aloyisus' College, as a postulant in the Mercy Order.  She taught, or she was school principal, in many different places including Parkside, Albert Park, Millicent, Mt. Gambier and Elizabeth North.
In 1977 Sister Kathrine was granted six months sabbatical leave and she wet out on a new and challenging time in her life, when, for four months, she lived with the very poor workers and their families in the slums of Manila; also in a fishing village on Panay Island; also on a sugar cane Hacienda in Negros Island (whilst she was here Sister Kathrine heard of her father's sudden death and she returned temporarily to Australia), and also she stayed in a Moslem village in Mindaneo Isalnd.  she also met up with sister Christopher (Kath Slattery) who also came from Snowtown, when she visited the Solomon Islands on her journey to the Philipppines.
Sister Kathrine said, "I well remember travelling on the Mission boat, the Dominic, with Sister Kath Slattery.  A storm broke and the ship was rolling badly in the swell, I felt terribly sea sick and I always remember Kath Slattery, a seasoned sailor by then, offering me a big stick of sugar cane to chew as a remedy - but I was past redemption.  I was seasick for seven hours."
Sister Kathrine completed some study in the Philippines on "Approaches to Human development" and on her return to Australia did further studies on Spirituality.  On her return to Adelaide in 1979, Sister Kathrine was appointed to a controlling position for the Adelaide sisters of Mercy, and she is at present working with their novices and young sisters.
She also has had a friendly association with The Single Parent Group which was formed in 1979 to help single parents to become supportive, in friendship and Christian living, for each other.
Congratulations to Sister Kathrine Conley, RSM, on her Silver Jubilee, and many happy returns of this day.

The ladies who entered the community as novice and nun were sisters, daughters of Mr. George Connell, retired lieutenant and quarter-master attached to the South Australian staff.   The reception was that of Miss Mary Agnes Connell, now known as Sister Winifred, and the novice who took the final vows was Miss Alice Maud Connell, whose name in religion Sister Mary Mercy Paul.  The ceremonies were performed by Monsagnor Byrne, V.G., assisted by Father Ayrward, and took place in the convent chapel, which was decorated for the occasion. Among those present were the parents of the young ladies who took the veil, two brothers, Major Weir and Lieutenant Bannigan  of the South Australian Military Forces Father Delahunty, and many other Mends of the principals in the ceremonies.

Both the sacred services were solemn and impressive, and were carried out with all the elaborate ceremonial of the Catholic Church. The reception began with a procession of nuns and novices into the chapel, all bearing lighted tapers, made an invisible choir and organ in another chamber lined the building with solemn religious harmony.  Then  followed  the blessing and reception  of the candles to be carried by the lady about to take the white veil and enter upon her two years noviciate.  Miss Connell knelt in front of the altar, attired in festive bridal dress, with a wreath, of orange-blossoms on her head, and was "interrogated" by Monsignor Byrne.  Her replies being satisfactory, the habit, white veil, cloak, and scripture were, blessed and received by the officiating priest, while many prayers  were delivered, and the choir rendered hymns and chants, in one of which the candidate took a soloist's part.  Then conducted by the Mother Superior and her assistant Miss Connell retired to take off her secular dress, and returned to the altar attired in the white veil and habit of a novice. More prayers and singing, and the novice was sprinkled with holy water while lying prostrate on her face before the altar. The novice was then blessed, and was formally kissed and welcomed by all the nuns present.

After a short interval, the still more solemn ceremony of taking the black veil the final renunciation or the world was gone through by Miss Alice Maud Connell, who had passed through her two years' noviciate,  and had  determined to cast in her lot until death with the Sisters Of Mercy.  Prayer and music went on all through the ceremony, as in the previous one, but the service was longer and more impressive. The novice knelt at the altar attired in the white robes and white veil of the order, while the black veil she was to assume, and the ring she was to wear as the bride of Christ, were blessed and sprinkled with holy water. The interrogation followed, and next came the solemn "act of profession."  The vow was written on parchment  and the novice, kneeling before it, end facing the altar, recited the words of the solemn vow in a clear, decisive voice, renouncing the world, and binding herself to "poverty, chastity, and obedience, and the service of the poor, sick, and ignorant."  She then signed the document.  Then the veil and ring were "received," the novice prostrated herself before the altar, while prayers were recited and 'hymns sung’.   Rising,  the Mother Superior placed the black veil on her head, and Monsignor Byrne encircled the third finger of her left hand with the ring. Holy mass was celebrated, and the ceremony concluded with, the blessing of the newly-professed nun, who was welcomed by her sister nuns, and a procession was formed and marched out of the chapel.

After the religious ceremonies the clergy and visitors were entertained at a sumptuous breakfast in the large refectory of the convent. As the taking of the black veil typifies a spiritual wedding the breakfast was similar to that provided at ordinary worldly weddings, even a huge bride cake having been provided. The newly made nun entered the room and shook hands with everybody, receiving their congratulations, and an enjoyable half hour was spent sampling the delicacies provided by the nuns.

Monsignor Byrne, who presided briefly thanked those present for their attendance at the joyous ceremony of the morning.  Such ceremonies, he said, were becoming very frequent, as shown by the fact that when the sisters first came to the convent they numbered only 12 and there were now 50 in the building. Some of them would soon be leaving in Order to work in other parts of the country  where no doubt their services would be welcomed by the poor and the afflicted as well as by the children.  The sisters were recruiting their numbers by young ladies from the principal families in Adelaide and suburbs.   He hoped they would soon have another opportunity of witnessing similar ceremonies to those of that morning.   Three young ladies only last week had expressed their intention of joining the community of nuns, and had, as a matter of fact, become postulants with that object in view.

Mr. George Connell also thanked those present for their attendance and congratulations. It was a matter of great happiness and pride to him to think that his daughters had joined such a noble and holy community; and although he was sorry to part with them, he knew that his loss would be their gain.

She acquired an aura of romance on account of ther Argentinian legacy, but she rmained simple and warm.  It was her genrerous disposal of her considerable family inheritance which had opened the way for the quite extensive material expansion of the works of the congregation.  A perior of vitality, and a scale of development otherwise not pissible.
She taught from time to time athe the school, mainly music, but concentrated on the beginners, being content to ahnd them on to others when they became more proficient.  She may not have possessed as much musical talent as others among her colleagues, but she had the patience and kindness to persevere with her small pupils.  Her humility, though an heiress, greatly impressed some of the boarders.  She enlivened the boarders dull weekends by playing cards with the seniors.  She would always lose and pay her opponents a shilling.
In 1896, Cecelia was in the position of REverned Mother.  Cecilia's retiring disposition did not hinder her from being direct and forthright, when the good of the schools or of the community demanded it.  She showed this strength in her dealings with the archdiocesan Church Commissions in 1896.  The latter found they were not dealing with a submissive or inexperienced female.
Mother Cecelia's best work was probably in the formation of the novices to the community.  She had been elected to that position in her twenties, and spent many periods in the role.  A short, rotund, cheerful and kindly lady, she appeared always pleasant and unassuming.  She was mild and placid in temperment, though aroused to angher when the occasion demanded.  She was very kind, but somewhat outmoded - at least, so though her novices of later years - in her ideas of formation.  On the other hand, some of the professed sisters considered her discipline too lax.  She was a woman at ease with herself, both her limitatins and her gifts.  Cecilia in the community was thought to be a model of prayer, very humble, very unassuming, and very patient.  Her example and guidance made a great impression.
Cecelia was 83 when she became in 1941, the first MOther General of the re-united Adelaide and Mount Gambier communities.  By then, she was the last survivor of the Argentinian group in Australia, and was holding the post of Reverend Mother of Adelaide.  With long experience of leadership, she was seen as a fitting symbol of unity, an appropirate person to bring about the harmonius uniting of the two groups which, though stemming from a common origin, had had separate existences for nearly sixty years.  Her selection was welcomed by her sisters with much affection.  She had been Novice Mistress to many of them, and her deep wisdom and her personal goodness were appreciated by all.  She was seen as a woman of great peace and modesty, yet of indomitable strength.
Always the dignigied, courteous, accomplished lady, as well as the meek, humble and self-forgotten Religious.  She had a most loving heart and was particularly distinguished by her benignity and generousity of nature.
Cecelia resigned her office as Mother General a the beginning of 1945.  She was then an old lady in her eighty eighth year.
